ABOUT ME

What's up! My name is Jake Howran and I'm in my third year of iBioMed, specializing in Health, Engineering Science, and Entrepreneurship. I'm running to be your next Vice President Academic for 2021-2022.

This year has been a complex year for engineering innovation, community engagement, and academia. Luckily, I've been fortunate enough to help soften the move to online education as a TA in 1P13, Anatomy 2F03, and Anatomy 2FF3. I am also in my second year on McMaster's Emergency First Response Team, and serve on the executive teams for iBioMed's own tutoring service, as well as HESE's first-ever case competition committee. I've been privileged enough to interact with students, professors, and community leaders in Engineering, Business, and Health Sciences, and I understand that communication between these professions has never been more important.

My campaign has three major pillars: the first is Enhanced Accommodation. A pandemic is already a huge impingement on our education, and the online learning environment has not always met the needs of our students. Alongside students and faculty, I plan on facilitating conversations around reducing screen time, accomodating students in different timezones or with educational limitations, and workload reduction. The second pillar is Advocation for all Identities; McMaster Engineering is comprised of thousands of Canada's brightest minds, inclusive of all ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, and religions. I want to make room for each of these identities in our policies, and ensure that the MES speaks to the academic concerns of all students, especially those that feel their voices are often lost in the crowd. Finally, my last pillar is that of Interdisciplinary Engagement. My hope is to cultivate new community partnerships and generate new opportunities for students to experiment in industry and research, and provide new avenues for Co-op searches by bringing students and employers together through real-world problem-solving.

Keep reading below to see how I hope to make these changes happen.

MY VALUES

If you know me, you know I talk a lot. I talk a lot about school, about friends and family, and about science and cool medical things that interest me. But more importantly, I talk a lot about social injustices, room for improving our education, and about ways our academic careers are changing on a daily basis.

As a medical responder, TA, researcher, welcome week rep, student, and friend, I have been able to navigate so many incredible environments here at Mac. Through each of my experiences, I have grown to understand just how diverse this school is, and I am reminded that I stand in a place of privilege, not just to be at this institution, but even among my peers and colleagues.

The role of the VP Academic is to consolidate the lived experiences of our students and amplify them in a way that builds on or improves the MES's current infrastructure. Whether through policy, events, committees, or discussions, it stands that the VPA is a conversationalist who works to bring new academic ventures and resolutions to the constituents of the MES.

Whether online, in-person, or a hybrid of both, the 2021-2022 school year brings more opportunities and challenges for McMaster Engineering. I hope I have your confidence in my ability to pursue those opportunities and overcome those challenges.
